Is Breathwork Right for Me?

For most people, breathwork is a safe, grounding practice — and we want you to feel fully informed and confident before you step into an experience with Breath Portal. Below, we've outlined what you need to know about eligibility, contraindications, and how we screen for safety, so you can breathe with peace of mind.

Who Should Take Extra Care

Breath Portal's guided breathwork uses intentional breathing patterns that can shift heart rate, blood pressure, and states of consciousness. We take safety seriously, and we ask every participant to review the conditions below before registering.

Cardiovascular Conditions

If you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, a history of stroke, or take heart medication, I ask that you obtain medical clearance before participating.

Seizure Disorders

Breathwork can alter states of consciousness. If you have epilepsy or a history of seizures, this practice is not recommended without direct guidance from your neurologist.

Pregnancy

We do not recommend intensive breathwork during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or think you may be, please let us know before booking so we can guide you toward a safe alternative.

Recent Surgery or Injury

Recent surgery, a detached retina, glaucoma, or a recent injury can be affected by changes in breathing and blood pressure. Please consult your physician first.

Psychiatric Conditions

If you have a diagnosed psychiatric condition such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, or severe anxiety, breathwork can bring up intense emotions. We require clearance from your mental health provider before you attend.

Other Health Concerns

Asthma, panic disorder, and certain medications can also affect how your body responds. When in doubt, ask — we would always rather answer a question up front than have you feel unprepared.

Important Disclaimer

Breathwork with Breath Portal is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment, diagnosis, or therapy. We are breathwork facilitators, not medical professionals, and nothing in a session should be understood as medical advice. If you are currently under the care of a doctor or therapist, please consult them before joining a session. If you are experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, contact emergency services immediately.

Health Questionnaire & Waiver

Every participant — whether booking a private session, joining a corporate event, a retreat, or a public event — completes a health questionnaire and signs a waiver before registration is confirmed. This is a required step, not an optional formality, and it's how we keep every session safe.

1

What We Ask

Before your session, you'll complete a short health questionnaire covering cardiovascular history, seizure history, pregnancy status, recent surgeries, current medications, and any psychiatric diagnoses or ongoing mental health treatment.

2

How It's Used

We review every questionnaire personally before your session. It allows us to tailor the pacing, intensity, and coaching of your breathwork experience — or, if needed, recommend a gentler format or request medical clearance first.

3

Your Privacy

Your health information is kept confidential and is used only for safety screening and session personalization. It is never shared beyond what's necessary to plan a safe experience for you.
